REPORTING THE FUTURE
6.00pm for 6.30pm, Wednesday 23 November 2011
Media stories about the future are often sensationalist. Wild technology forecasts (‘Welcome to tomorrow's world... where robots have rights and the moon is just another holiday destination’ ) vie for attention with predictions of doom (‘Obesity is as serious a threat as climate change’). Potential catastrophes like the Millennium Bug and the SARs pandemic come and go in the headlines, leaving us none the wiser. So how can journalists and programme makers judge the flood of future visions and scenarios being put forward by technology companies, brands, special interest groups, think tanks and politicians? Is it unrealistic to expect informed, rational and dispassionate reporting about the future?
