SPRING DRINKS WITH PETER YORK

6.30pm, Tuesday 31 March 2009

Style - and substance at the Groucho

More than any other contemporary British journalist, Peter York has not only chronicled much of metropolitan life over the past three decades, but has helped define it. An acute observer of modern social trends, he is a journalist who reflects a tradition that dates back to the 18th century Spectator; a writer who can see the wider significance in the apparently transient or ephemeral.  As such, he is perfectly placed to comment on some of the journalistic revolutions he's seen - and in some cases helped inspire.

His latest books, ‘Dictators’ Homes’ and ‘Return of the Sloane Ranger’ (written with Olivia Stewart-Liberty) place interior decoration and ‘mockney’ in their rightful place – at the summit of human endeavour. His BBC documentary ‘The Rise and Fall of the Adman’ last year reminded us all that 20th Century advertising is the proper study of all serious social historians.

Julie Burchill called him ‘God-like’.

Witty and wise, and thoroughly entertaining, Peter's talk to our March 31 gathering at the (where else?) Groucho Club is not to be missed.
