THE MEDIA SOCIETY MOURNS THE LOSS OF A FOUNDING FATHER
06/01/2010
The Media Society is saddened to learn of the passing of one of its co-founders, Mr. George Glenton. Mr Glenton, of Scarborough, worked as an Old Bailey correspondent for the Daily Mirror in the 60s and 70s.
In addition to his work in journalism, George published numerous books and was partly responsible for bringing the idea of a cross-profession media society to fruition.
According to TMS member Roger Bush, “George was President of the Institute of Journalists in 1972, when complicated plans for a merger of the Institute and the National Union of Journalists were being debated. Amid anxieties that a merger would swamp the smaller Institute and result in a dilution of its historic role in upholding the highest standards in journalism, General Secretary Bob Farmer and the President launched The Media Society as a sort of lifebelt.”
Mr. Glenton is survived by his wife Nancy and his daughters Rose-Mary and Anna-Louise.
