What do we do

We host regular debates, meetings and informal receptions to discuss hot topics that are at the heart of what’s going on in the media right now – and how the media is likely change in the future. Find out more about our events.

These topics have recently included the future of public service broadcasting, privacy and the press, political reporting and the development of digital media. Leading media figures – newsmakers and opinion-formers in their own right – and some of the best speakers in the country make sure that the debates are always well-informed and entertaining. And they take place at great London venues including the Groucho Club in Soho, The Arts Club in Mayfair, Soho House and the 14th century Charterhouse monastery. You can read a lively and entertaining commentary on all the events that we host by signing up to receive our free e-newsletter.

We award an annual bursary to a promising student from a university journalism department, which also includes a work experience placement at a prestigious media organisation.

And every year we hold an award dinner to recognise a person or organisation judged to have made a particularly distinguished contribution to the industry. This is a major event and one of the highlights of The Media Society calendar.

This is shown by the calibre of the people who have received awards. We have given awards to iconic figures including: David Dimbleby, Sir Geoffrey Cox CNZM CBE, Sir David Frost OBE, John Humphrys, Sir Charles Wheeler CMG, Sir Michael Parkinson CBE, Paul Dacre, Gillian Reynolds MBE, Jon Snow, Jenni Murray OBE, Alistair Cooke KBE, Sir David Attenborough CBE FRS, Dame Ann Leslie and Reuters.
