A Tribute to Katharine Whitehorn - January 2021
We at TMS were saddened to hear that Katharine Whitehorn, the great Observer columnist , had died. She was a supporter and friend to TMS and to Geraldine Sharpe Newton, our former president.
Geraldine has written a tribute to Katharine.
"Arriving in London in 1983 from New York City to work at ITN, I met Katharine first through her columns in the Guardian and then the Observer. I was instantly hooked.
She was a must read for someone who needed to get to the thinking and heart of English feminism and society. I loved her feisty writing. She represented the DNA of women's voices. She wrote about all those things we felt but didn’t necessarily say. She was a voice of truth. She provoked, entertained, and educated us. Her columns were an integral part of our lives. When she spoke with that glorious husky voice we were captivated and we listened.
Katharine was a long term supporter of TMS, offering me advice and guidance when I was President. I consider myself lucky in having her as a friend and mentor. To her family we at the Society send our heartfelt thoughts. Your Mother was a wonderful, fearless writer and she will not be forgotten.."
Geraldine Sharpe Newton - Former President, The Media Society.
