About the Media Society

The Media Society is a British charity that organises events and activities for all those who care about the media.

We have developed an exciting new strategy for the Society for 2025 – involving new activities and more reasons to become a member.

Our events will continue to be our top priority. We have always been an events-based organisation – ever since the Media Society was set up, over 50 years ago.

We plan to build our events around two seasons – the Spring/Summer season from March to June, and the Autumn/Winter season from September to December.

They will be a mixture of in-person, virtual and hybrid events. We will also produce Media Society podcasts, and will re-stream our events and podcasts onto the Media Society YouTube Channel.

Later in the year, we plan to launch the Media Society Mentoring Programme - matching media mentors and mentees, and producing a series of ‘masterclass’ workshops, covering a wide area of media topics.

The Media Society is for anyone interested in or who works in the media - including journalists, broadcasters, publishers, content creators, media academics and students, media lawyers, and those in digital marketing, comms and PR.

History of the Media Society

The Media Society was founded in 1973 to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and opinion between those in public and political life, the professions, industry and education.

It aimed to involve members of the public in a continuing debate on the role of mass communication in a democratic society.

Its first President was Sir Geoffrey Cox, one of the early Editors of ITN.

Founder members included Sir Alistair Burnet, Lord Cudlipp, Lord Deedes, Sir William Rees-Mogg, Sir Harold Evans, Sir Ian Trethowan, and Charles Wintour.
