The North-South Media Divide: problem solved or still an issue?
In-person event at 6.00pm on Monday 9th November 2026 at the BBC in Manchester.
Event Description
As Andy Burnham aims to shift the political focus away from London by establishing a Number 10 North, the Media Society is in Salford to discuss whether relocations such as the BBC’s move to Salford, and other parts of the UK, and Channel 4’s move to Leeds are successful blueprints for decentralisation.
What’s been the real impact on the media landscape?
Is the UK media now more representative of its population? While MediaCity in Salford has become a successful hub for creative businesses, where are the key commissioning decisions still made?
Meanwhile, what future for local radio programmes as they’re replaced by centralised network output?
And does location anyway still matter so much in the TikTok era, when home-working has become a way of life for so many journalists, producers and content creators?
Hosted by the BBC as they celebrate 15 years in Salford, we bring together a panel of Manchester-based media professionals to discuss whether there is still a north-south divide in the media.
