Substack and Newsletters: the new journalism?

Join us for a Media Society debate on Zoom to discuss the rise of Newsletters - and how they are changing the world of journalism and communication.

Indeed, platforms such as Substack have transformed the newsletter business - making it one of the biggest growing new media areas in recent years.

Many high-profile journalists have left legacy media outlets to set up their own newsletters. Newsletters are also being seen as a saviour for local media.

But how do you launch and grow a successful newsletter? Are we reaching a saturation point in subscriptions? And what about accuracy and fairness?

This online discussion event is being produced by newsletter writer and TMS Vice President Charlotte Henry and TMS Council member Dan Seamarks.

They write: “A bit like flares, newsletters seem to be back in fashion. So just why did they become so popular again? Was it the likes of daily (now twice daily) hot-off-the-press gossipy tones of Playbook or the rise of platforms like Substack?

“Why do publishers now consider them an essential part of their output? And will the current newsletter craze sustain or, like flares in the 70s, will it fade again over time as the next media obsession comes along?

“We'll be tackling all those questions and more.”
